Design options for a deposit return scheme to be developed

We have welcomed today’s announcement by Environment Secretary, Roseanna Cunningham, that Zero Waste Scotland will investigate design options and the costs and benefits of how a Deposit Return Scheme in Scotland could operate in Scotland.

While we believe that a Deposit Return Scheme will not address in full Scotland’s wider litter challenge it may lead to an increase in recycling rates, and could play an important role in assisting with the reduction of littering of cans and bottles.

We are keen that any proposed Deposit Return Scheme for Scotland is developed through an inclusive process which ensures that all stakeholders can make a positive contribution.  We believe that it is crucial that any system effectively integrates with our national litter strategy and wider efforts to tackle litter, waste management and recycling interventions and activities.  Importantly it must also be designed to minimise overall carbon emissions and not create new, alternative, negative environmental impacts.

We look forward engaging in future discussions and to seeing the proposals put forward for general consultation in due course.
