A brand new series of teacher training videos that will help schools reduce their impact on the planet are now available to access on the SSN Local Footprints Project website. The five training videos have been produced by the Local Footprints Project to support teachers to use the Schools Global Footprint resources.

New guidance by the Scottish Government on how to ensure local services are better designed and built around people and local communities, and a new report by the new economics foundation (nef) on the benefits of co-production, were both published this month. The theme of better aligning public, private and community action on sustainable development and climate change will be central to this year's SSN Conference, taking place on 10 November.

Applications are now being sought for a Masters in Applied Carbon Management, a programme offered as a result of a unique partnership between the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Glasgow and the Crichton Carbon Centre (Scottish Charity No SCO38915), a not for profit postgraduate teaching and research organisation, with a remit to assist in the transition to a low carbon society.

The environmental think tank, the Green Alliance, published a briefing note on 13 July that aims to demistify and summarise the latest climate science. The briefing was produced under the Green Alliance's 'Climate Leadership Programme' for MPs, in association with the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London.

A report published on 19 July by the House of Lords Science and Technology Sub-Committee into the way the Government tries to influence people's behaviour using behaviour change interventions found that 'nudges' used in isolation are unlikely to be effective. The report argued that a whole range of measures - including some regulatory measures - will be needed to change behaviour in a way that will make a real difference to society's biggest problems.

Highland Council recently announced the launch of a ground-breaking Heat Map that was developed using a methodology that is repeatable for all other Scottish local authorities. The Heat Map, which will help to identify and define future renewable heat opportunities in the area, is a Scottish Government-funded pilot project that has been developed specifically to help deliver the Scottish Government target of 11% of all heat demand from renewable sources by 2020.

Foresight, the UK Government's futures think tank, published a report on 11 July which shows that the UK will be vulnerable to adverse impacts from climate change abroad. The report 'International Dimensions of Climate Change' argues that attention needs to be given to how climate change effects in other countries may have domestic impacts here.

Launched on 7 July, the Common Cause Handbook is designed to be a 'slimmer, lighter' version of WWF's Common Cause Report. The Common Cause Handbook argues values and 'frames' play a key role in shaping our thoughts and actions, and must be taken into account when we communicate issues such as climate change to others.

Key findings from the 5-year ESRC-funded RESOLVE research programme on lifestyles, values and the environment were presented at a conference held on 15 June in London. All conference presentations and audio from the day can now be accessed online. RESOLVE Director Professor Tim Jackson, American academic Professor Juliet Schor, Transition movement founder Rob Hopkins and chair of the House of Lords Behaviour Change Inquiry Baroness Neuberger were among the key speakers on the day.

Registration is now open for Sustainable Scotland Network's annual conference, 'Local Action for a Sustainable Scotland'. On 5 July the European Parliament voted against the adoption of a report seeking to increase the EU target for greenhouse gas emissions reduction from 20% to 30% by 2020 from 1990 levels. The report was rejected following the adoption of a series of amendments by Conservative groupings of MEPs - including UK Conservative MEPs - that watered down the report to such an extent that the report's author, Green MEP Bas Eickhout, opted to encourage MEPs not to vote in its favour.

On 6 July Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the UK Government estate had cut its carbon emissions by 13.8% between May 2010-May 2011, 3.8% above the intended target of 10%. On the same day, the UK Government also announced that it was launching a series of trials, working with businesses and local authorities, aimed at making it easier for the public to adopt energy efficient behaviours. The trials are outlined in a new report from the Government's Behavioural Insights Team and will be carried out and evaluated in time for the roll out of the Green Deal in 2012.

The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) published its third annual report to the UK Parliament, reviewing Government's efforts to meet carbon budgets and drive down emissions. The report highlights the "lack of progress" made in reducing emissions over the course of 2010, and states that the underlying emissions trend for the year was "incompatible with the need for deep emissions cuts required to meet carbon budgets".

Following a request from the Scottish Government in March 2011, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) issued a letter on 4 July to the Scottish Government, advising on Scottish emission targets for the years 2023-2027. The letter also advised the Scottish Government on the use of credits to meet targets in 2013-2017.

At the recent C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group in Sao Paulo, C40 and ICLEI announced that they will jointly establish a global standard for accounting and reporting community-scale greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that can be used across multiple platforms. The two organisations hope the standard, due to be launched in November this year, will 'result in consistent, robust and comparable city inventories'.

On 30 June the UK Government announced a set of proposals that it says will make the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme 'simpler, easier and more straightforward'. The proposals will be formally consulted on in early 2012, but the Government is encouraging comments from CRC EES participants now.
