Aberdeenshire Provost becomes 500th member of Award Winning Litter Project

Aberdeenshire Environmental Forum are delighted to announce that Provost Jill Webster of Aberdeenshire Council has signed up as the 500th member of the award winning Aberdeenshire Litter Initiative - ALi This coincides with the fifth anniversary of the project which was launched in June 2007 by Provost Howatson of Aberdeenshire who was the very first volunteer litter picker signed up.

Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development

The high-level summit of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development begins today, 20 June. Over 190 countries will be represented at the three-day event which hopes to see governments agree to a set of shared sustainable development principles, landmarks and goals.

Climate Group Champions Benefits of LED Street Lighting in New Global Report

A report by the Climate Group launched at the Rio+20 summit has found that LED street lighting can generate energy savings as high as 85%, as well as bringing social and environmental benefits to localities. The Group are calling for all public lighting to be LED by 2020.

Scotland’s Water Resources will be Impacted by Climate Change and Population Growth, says Report

A report published by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Scotland on 13 June has warned that the impacts of both climate change and population growth will put added pressure on Scotland’s water resources as rainfall is less predictable and demand continues to increase. The Institution is calling on government to ensure Scotland’s water industry is fit for the future, and has also warned of the environmental impacts of selling water via long-distance transfers.

First UK Map of District Heating Schemes Published

The Combined Heat and Power Association (CHPA) has published the UK’s first map of district heating schemes online. The CHPA also have a number of other resources available online, including a guidance document on planning, developing and delivering community energy schemes.

New Economics Foundation Publishes 2012 Happy Planet Index

Report Analyses Cities' Climate Change Activities and Underlines Opportunities for Green Growth

A new report published on 7 June by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has analysed the carbon and water strategies of 73 cities across the world. The report's authors highlighted that 82% of cities identified the potential for economic growth as a result of their climate change mitigation and adaptation activity.

Raising EU 2020 Emissions Target to 30 Percent Affordable, Says Report

A report published on 26 April by leading analysis company Bloomberg New Energy Finance states that raising the European Union's carbon reduction target for 2020 from 20% to 30% will cost EU countries under 0.04% of GDP, with some member states getting a net benefit.
