The 2012 Seaside and Blue Flag beaches have been announced

At an event held in Portobello today, Wednesday 30th May, it was announced that a total of 61 Scottish beaches now hold the coveted Seaside Award status, given for 2012 by the country’s leading charity for the environment, Keep Scotland Beautiful. Eight will also now be able to fly the internationally-acclaimed Blue Flag. Both awards, given annually, recognise high standards of cleanliness, safety, and water quality.

Local Authorities have ‘Crucial Role’ in Reducing UK Emissions, says CCC

A report published by the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) on 17 May says that local authorities play a ‘crucial role’ in meeting national emissions targets, and that limited action by local government would put achievement of UK carbon targets at risk.

UK Government Publishes Draft Energy Bill

On 22 May Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey announced the publication of a draft UK Energy Bill. The Bill includes significant measures to reform the electricity market which Mr Davey said were necessary to 'ensure we keep the lights on, bills down and the air clean'.

Fife Council Gains WWF Silver Sustainable Timber Procurement Award

Wind Farm Developments Must Benefit Local Communities, says JRF

Scotland’s Climate Change Declaration – Year 3 Analysis Published

Sustainable Scotland Network and Adaptation Scotland have published two new analyses of Scottish local authority climate change mitigation and adaptation activity for the period 2010-11. The analyses draw on information provided directly by councils in their reports on Scotland’s Climate Change Declaration.

WWF Publishes Living Planet Report 2012

The World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report, published on 15 May, reveals that there has been a 30% decline in the health of species since 1970, and that the global population is consuming 50% more natural resources globally than our planet can sustainably produce.

Cities Must Start to Adapt to Climate Change, say EEA

A major new report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) has highlighted that urban areas are particularly at risk from the impacts of climate change. The report states that cities across Europe should start to invest in adaptation measures now to avoid higher costs further down the line.

SNH Publishes Sharing Good Practice Events Programme 2012-2013
