On 23 April Oxfam Scotland launched the first results from its ‘Humankind Index for Scotland’ project, which aims to assess Scotland’s prosperity through a ‘multi-dimensional measure of prosperity’ that goes beyond traditional economic models such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Index revealed that ‘local’ measures – including access to facilities and living in a clean and healthy environment – were more important to people that factors related to the economy.

A new study commissioned by the European Commission has assessed the uptake of Green Public Procurement practices across the 27 countries of the European Union. The study found that an EC target that 50% of all public tendering procedures should be green in the EU by 2010 has not been met.

On 18 April, the latest volume in the TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) publication series was published, focusing on the application of the TEEB approach to local and regional policy and management. The Worldwatch Institute has also recently published the latest work in its flagship State of the World series, which showcases policies and approaches that are advancing sustainable development in the twenty-first century.

A new report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has assessed UK local authorities’ policies and actions on the environmentally responsible purchasing of timber and paper products. The report, which is based on survey responses from local authorities, forms part of WWF’s ‘What Wood You Choose?’ campaign that highlights the impact of using illegal and unsustainable wood and wood products.

A new report from the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development analyses the carbon strategies from the 60 largest UK cities and assesses how successfully each has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions. The report highlights that local low carbon action by cities will be vital if the UK is to meet its carbon targets.
