Going Carbon Neutral Stirling (GCNS) is an exemplar project of the Scottish Government and Big Lottery and, over four years, it has engaged over 11,000 people in reducing their carbon footprint. On the 20th of April the GCNS project team are holding a one day seminar to share with you the results, achievements and key learning from the project.

On 27 March the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) launched a consultation setting out proposals to simplify the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC EES). The consultation follows in the wake of Chancellor George Osborne’s Budget statement last week, in which he said the scheme would be replaced with an alternative environmental tax if 'major savings in the administrative cost of the Commitment for business' could not be found.

All five of Scotland’s main political leaders pledged on 24 March to ensure Scotland delivers on its world-leading climate change targets. The announcement comes ahead of WWF’s global Earth Hour event on 31 March, during which cities and individuals across the world will switch off their lights for one hour to highlight the impacts of climate change.

Run by the Green Business Partnership, the Environmental Placement Programme (EPP) places students within the Scottish public and private sector to undertake projects with an environmental focus. The EPP provides organisations with focused, low cost practical environmental support, whilst providing students with paid work experience in a commercial environment. Organisations, including local authorities, are invited to register their interest in taking part in the scheme.

On 12 March, the Scottish Government, SSE, SEPA and Microsoft jointly launched a national competition for software developers to produce an app that will assist small and medium-sized businesses in Scotland in reducing their carbon emissions. A prize of £50,000 will be awarded to the winning entry.

A recent litter audit along a sample of Scotland’s busy central-belt road network found over half of the roads surveyed had unacceptable litter levels (57 per cent), with almost two thirds (71 per cent) littered with confectionary and crisp wrappers thrown needlessly from cars, vans and trucks by drivers and passengers.

Official statistics released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (defra) on 8 March estimating carbon dioxide emissions relating to UK consumption revealed that the UK’s ‘consumption based’ carbon footprint in 2009 was 20 per cent higher than in 1990.
