A campaign to boost road safety by cutting conflict between cyclists and motorists has been awarded £424,000 by Transport Scotland. Transport Minister Keith Brown announced the additional funding for Cycling Scotland’s Mutual Respect Campaign at the opening of Scotland’s first Rail Cycle Hub at Stirling Railway Station. The campaign will be launched in August to help create a culture of mutual respect between cyclists, pedestrians, motorists and other road users across the country.

Zero Waste Scotland has just opened the application process for the Volunteer and Community Advocate Programme. Successful applicants will be grant funded to deliver community engagements that will change behaviours in targeted areas to deliver both increased household recycling and reduced household food waste.

Zero Waste Scotland has published new guidance outlining good practice for the use of quality compost across a host of building, civil engineering, landscaping and regeneration projects in Scotland and across the UK. The Good Practice Guide for the use of BSI PAS 100 Compost in Landscape and Regeneration outlines the environmental and business cases for using compost, and associated savings.

Proposals to investigate the potential to put very small wind turbines on land with buildings owned by Fife Council to generate up to £8.6million are to go to before the Executive Committee of Fife Council. Councillors will be asked to agree plans to carry out feasibility studies to identify up to 50 sites owned by the council suitable for very small scale turbine developments.

Heat loss from all of Aberdeen buildings is being detected using thermal imaging equipment during flights commissioned to assess the city's energy loss. Aberdeen City Council says it thinks it is the only Scottish local authority carrying out this type of work to assess how energy-efficient the city's buildings are, with a view to helping people to make improvements.

Thousands of new recycling bins are set to appear across Scotland, making it easier to recycle when people are away from the home. The new facilities, funded through a £850,000 investment from Zero Waste Scotland, will make it easier for people to recycle, turning the problem of litter into a useable resource for Scotland.
