Fife Council is supporting Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group by taking part in two Transport Pledge initiatives – one to promote public transport and one to increase electric vehicle use. The 2020 Group is calling on Scottish organisations to lead by example by signing up to the pledge, which consists of four projects that cover electric vehicles, virtual meeting technology, public transport and fuel efficient driving.

As atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide approach hit the milestone of 400 parts per million (ppm), a scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the United States has launched a website http://keelingcurve.ucsd.edu/ that will publish daily readings of CO2 concentrations, an online resource he hopes will drive home the urgent threat of rising greenhouse gas emissions.

The Crown Estate has launched a new website to support collaboration in the emerging wave and tidal industry. Called the Wave and Tidal Knowledge Network, the website will make it easier for organisations to share information with each other and help deliver industry growth.

Two new films focussing on climate change were launched on Monday – World Earth Day. Thin Ice visited researchers on four continents and the ocean as they studied the changes in the atmosphere, oceans and ice sheets.

Two members of the Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN) were among representatives from Scottish organisations highlighting Scotland’s work on climate change adaptation at the first European Climate Change Adaptation conference in Hamburg, Germany, recently. The conference was attended by over 700 experts, policy makers and practitioners from across the world, and covered issues ranging from strategies for Europe’s coasts, mountains and cities, to the influence of climate change on the energy sector.

West Lothian Council has allocated over three-quarters of a million pounds to a project to fit solar panels on council-owned schools over the next two years. Besides helping the council to reduce carbon emissions and save money, the panels will be used to help educate children about the importance of tackling climate change.

Scotland is on target for renewable power to meet 50% of the country's power needs by 2015, according to a DECC report. Scotland generated 7% more renewable electricity in 2012 than it did the previous year.

The importance of the Sustainable Scotland Network’s work with local authorities was highlighted last week when SSN received an invitation from the Scottish Parliament’s Local Government and Regeneration Committee to give evidence at a roundtable session. This formed part of the Committee’s evidence gathering on the Scottish Government’s draft second Report on Proposals and Policies (RPP2) and its effectiveness in meeting the emissions reduction targets.
