The Natural Capital Committee, established to give independent advice to the UK Government on the state of England’s natural capital and help incorporate natural capital into the fabric of national and corporate accounting, has published its first annual State of Natural Capital Report.

A vision for a more sustainable Aberdeen through energy transition was unveiled recently at an event called ‘Setting the Agenda for Aberdeen's Energy Transition’. The event formed part of the Aberdeen City Council and EU-funded Mitigation in Urban areas: Solutions for Innovative Cities (MUSIC) Project, which aims to halve carbon emissions in Aberdeen and project partner cities Ghent, Ludwigsburg, Montreuil, and Rotterdam by 2030.

Glasgow has been shortlisted to be named European Green Capital in 2015. The city is one of just four to have reached the final stage of selection - together with Bristol, Brussels and Ljubljana.

The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) is inviting NGOs, educational institutes, local authorities and industry to apply for the Fourth European Paper Recycling Award to help recognise their efforts in implementing many innovative projects to enhance paper recycling across Europe, and to inspire others to copy good practices. The award will identify projects, initiatives and campaigns that contribute to European sustainability through supporting paper recycling.

Zero Waste Scotland has just opened the application process for the Volunteer and Community Advocate Programme. Hands on advice will be available on grants available through this scheme and the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund, which is administered by Keep Scotland Beautiful at a special event in Stirling.

“Adapting to Climate Change: An introduction for Public Sector policy makers, resource managers and practitioners”, has just been updated by Adaptation Scotland to meet the demand for information about climate change impacts and adaptation. Originally published in 2011, Adaptation Scotland hopes that the updated guide will continue to be used within Scotland’s public sector to raise awareness of the consequences of climate change and extreme weather impacts.

A new programme to help the public sector and business to manage energy, water and materials costs was launched last week. Resource Efficient Scotland (RES), managed by Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS), brings together this expertise into a single service for the first time, aiming to make it easier for Scottish organisations and businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to make savings and become more sustainable.

A new bill, the Regulatory Reform (Scotland) Bill, which the government says aims to bring greater efficiency and consistency to public services and help improve the environment, as well as creating more favourable business conditions for Scotland, has been introduced to the Scottish Parliament.
