Maureen Watt, MSP for Aberdeen South and North Kincardine, Kyrsten Black, Dean of Campus at the Scottish Agricultural College, Craibstone, Aberdeen, and Eve Keepax, Policy Officer (Food and the Environment) of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s flagship education programme, Eco-Schools Scotland, will rally together on 24th February to welcome Primary School delegates to a conference on the newest Eco-Schools Scotland topic – ‘Food and the Environment’. The topic aims to inspire and educate young people about food issues such as the use of Scottish produce, seasonality, waste reduction and food preparation.

Following the consultation on Feed in Tariffs (FITs) for solar PV in late 2011, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published its plans for the future of the scheme on 9 February. DECC has also published details of two new consultations, on solar PV cost controls and on tariffs for FIT technologies other than PV.

Aberdeen City Council have made a number of announcements over the last couple of months on sustainability and climate change developments. These include: a project to deploy hydrogen buses in the region; the extension of Aberdeen's Combined Heat and Power district heating network; a new initiative to engage council staff in reducing waste and energy; and the introduction of a car club for the city.

A new briefing paper has recently been prepared on behalf of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Procurement Capacity Development Centre (UNPCDC). The paper aims to provide a current understanding of sustainable public procurement (SPP), and to share approaches in the area of SPP which could be adapted to the regional, national or local context.

A recent survey by the Carbon Trust in association with the Guardian, published on 8 February, found that 58% of public sector agencies plan to make "tangible investments" in carbon reduction during 2012. This figure was lower for both businesses and the voluntary sector, at 46.4% and 33% respectively.

On 7 February, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published final estimates of UK greenhouse gas emissions for the year 2010. UK 2010 emissions of the basket of six greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol were estimated to be 3.1% higher than the 2009 figure.

On 23 January the Scottish Government published advisory guidance aimed at assisting the production of Sustainability Reports alongside Annual Reports and Accounts, from the 2011/12 financial year. The guidance is intended for Scottish Government Departments, Executive Agencies, non-Departmental Public Bodies, non–Ministerial Departments, Crown Office and Health Boards. Although it does not extend to Local Authorities or other public bodies, the guidance is expected to be of interest to them.

On 24 January, the Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN) held its first national members' meeting of the year. Around 40 sustainable development officers and other local government colleagues attended the event in Edinburgh, which profiled a range of case studies on the topic of engaging and supporting schools on sustainable development and climate change. Presentations from the day are now available on the SSN website.

A new website aims to bring together the latest research evidence on climate change communication, ensuring that it is accessible to both academics and practitioners. The website, Talking Climate, is a partnership project between the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN), the Public Interest Research Centre (PIRC) and Nottingham University School of Sociology and Social Policy.

On 30 January the UN High-level Panel on Global Sustainability published a major new report containing 56 recommendations to put sustainable development into practice and to mainstream it into economic policy. 'Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing' is the final report from the 22-member Panel, which was established in 2010 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to develop a new 'blueprint' for the planet's sustainable future.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) published its first progress report on emissions reduction in Scotland on 31 January. The CCC, UK Government's independent advisors on climate change, stated that Scotland had made 'good progress' to reduce emissions since 2009, but that new policies would be required to sustain this progress.

On 25 January the UK Government published the first assessment of the impacts the UK is facing from climate change. The Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) presents the latest evidence on the threats and opportunities of climate change for the UK to the end of the century. The CCRA consists of a number of reports, including 'a Climate Change Risk Assessment for Scotland'. A summary of the Scotland report is also available.
