Scotland has some beautiful beaches which are well used by local communities and visitors. Award flags have been flying at beaches around Scotland for over 20 years, recognising some of Scotland’s best managed beaches. A small number have achieved worldwide recognition with the Blue Flag Award in recent years.
For a beach to be successful in gaining an Beach Award, it has to meet a number of criteria including, but not limited to:
- Information provision
- Beach safety
- Beach management
- Access and facilities
After an application has been received, it will be visited by a trained assessor, who will then issue a report to the beach manager. The awards are reviewed annually. Local authorities, land managers or community groups are all eligible to apply for a Beach Award.
We host two meetings a year for award beach managers (in May and November) to provide an opportunity for networking and to share examples of good practice.
We are now closed for applications for 2017, and will be announcing the awarded beaches in May. We will open for 2018 applications in January next year.
