Scotland has some beautiful beaches which are well used by local communities and visitors. Keep Scotland Beautiful coordinates Scotland's Beach Awards.
Award flags have been flying at beaches around Scotland for over 20 years recognising some of Scotland’s most visited beaches and a small number have achieved worldwide recognition with the Blue Flag Award in recent years.
For a beach to be successful in gaining an Beach Award, it has to meet a number of criteria including, but not limited to:
After an application has been received, it will be assessed by a trained assessor, who will visit the site and issue a report. The awards are reviewed annually. Local authorities, land managers or community groups are all eligible to apply for a Beach Award.
Keep Scotland Beautiful hosts two meetings a year for award beach managers (in May and November); providing an opportunity for networking and sharing examples of good practice.
