What We Do

Keep Scotland Beautiful is an environmental charity which aims to achieve litter free and sustainable environments. We co-ordinate a number of programmes, including the Blue Flag award scheme for beach operators, Eco-Schools for schools and People and Places for Local Authorities and major landowners.

The charity's aims are: To protect, preserve and enhance the environment of town and country in Scotland for the benefit of the public and to educate the public about the environment generally by promoting awareness of the ways in which the environment is at risk and the ways in which this can be minimised.

The Waste Aware Scotland programme aims to achieve consistency of approach and terminology in waste awareness throughout Scotland. The campaign is also part of the work towards meeting Scotland's waste reduction and recycling targets. Local Waste Aware campaigns aim to increase waste awareness through promotion and education at the local level, particularly to encourage public participation in local recycling initiatives. There are also plans to promote Reduce and Reuse through campaigns at the national level.

The Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN) is a network of sustainable development officers and advocates from Scottish Local Authorities which aims to improve local government's contribution to achieving a sustainable Scotland; supporting local government’s sustainable development obligations under The Local Government in Scotland Act (2003).

These programmes enable others to deliver on environmental improvements. Our campaign work, however, usually involves national campaigning direct to the public. For example, in our litter campaigning work, we try to get the public to stop dropping litter and put it in a bin. Litter includes obvious things such as sweet wrappers and crisp packets, but also food litter (sandwiches and fast food), as well as chewing gum and cigarette ends. We use Keep Scotland Tidy as our slogan for litter campaigning, and have been using it for over forty years. You can download our campaign posters for free from the Keep Scotland Tidy website.
