Our History

Tackling Scotland’s environmental challenges since the 70s.
In the years following the Second World War there was a great increase of interest from the public in environmental matters.

In England, The National Federation of Women’s Institutes was eager to tackle the increasing litter problem and, in 1954, it passed a resolution to ‘Keep Britain Tidy’. They made trying to stop littering and encourageing a pride in local environments part of their organisation’s work.

Early Days
By the 1960s an independent organisation called Keep Britain Tidy had been formed to carry out this work. In Scotland, this organisation was known as Keep Scotland Beautiful.

During the 1980s and 1990s the organisation’s work had greatly expanded from the original focus on litter and, with the Scottish Parliament taking up its powers on 1 July 1999, Keep Scotland Beautiful decided that it would be appropriate to become an independent environmental charity. With enthusiastic charity trustees, volunteers and employees development of this independent Scottish charity was rapid.
